CINDERELLA
debuted as part of the Playhouse Musical Matinee Series and now,
after nearly two dozen tours to England, Alaska and Japan, and
after delighting more than a quarter of a million audience
members to date, this beloved heroine is being feted with an
entire year’s worth of special events, activities and alumni
guest performances, the theatre itself transformed into a
magical CINDERELLA house.
The feature presentation, of course, will be the ever-popular
musical CINDERELLA, a delightfully romantic original
classic for audiences between the ages of 2 and 102, the single
most requested Santa Monica Playhouse Family Theatre musical on
three continents, voted Playhouse audience favorite for the
thirteenth year in a row.
But that’s not all! The Playhouse is also presenting special
performances, parties, mini-festivals, dress-up early evening
performances, CINDERELLA birthday and tea parties,
CINDERELLA-themed Enchanted Lunchtime events, School Theatre
Field Trips, workshops and much more.
Since its world premiere at Santa Monica Playhouse in 1984,
CINDERELLA, written by Evelyn Rudie and Chris DeCarlo with
words and music by E. Rudie, has been performed locally,
nationally and in twenty cities throughout Japan and England.
The Santa Monica performances will feature Actors’ Repertory
Theatre members John Waroff (reprising befuddled King Osgood
Isgood, the role he created in 1984 and has been portraying ever
since), Celeste Akiki, James Cooper, Serena Dolinsky and Cydne
Moore, joined by members of the Playhouse Young Professionals’
Company and guest artists from around the world. The detailed
and authentic period costumes are by award-winning designer
Ashley Hayes. Special effects, including dancing flowers, a
magical broom, talking animals and musical cups and saucers are
created by FX master James Cooper.
Playhouse Alumni who will be reprising their roles for limited
engagements throughout the year include Cheryl Jennings and
Graham Silbert (Stepmother/Fairy Godmother), Kate Burleigh and
Catherine Tooke (Prunella/Grisella) and Matthew Wrather (Kerwin/Prince
Charming), and the Playhouse sends out the call to the
additional one hundred fifty plus CINDERELLA Alumni not to
hesitate in signing up for their own block of performance time.
CINDERELLA Alumni include Rina Mimoun (producer/writer
Gilmore Girls, Pushing Daisies), casting director Liz Dean,
Emmy-award winner Aisha Waglé, author Rebecca Donner and
television personality James Calvert.
A sampling of acclaim for the Santa Monica Playhouse
Rudie-DeCarlo production of
“CINDERELLA”
1984 to the present
“An Enchanting Cinderella!…captivates
its young audience,
highlighted by fast pacing, fancy costuming and a lovely,
unweepy Cinderella…she’s no slouch with a slightly risqué
put-down, either, particularly within the context of Rudie and
DeCarlo’s trademark Gilbert & Sullivan comic lyrics…The
Stepsisters’ braying laughter and clowning arrogance are a hit,
and Jennings, a longtime Playhouse pro, makes a polished dual
contribution as the ditsy Fairy Godmother.” L.A. TIMES
“As always, there is a magical and romantic quality
about the Family Theatre which lends a special resonance to any
work for children produced there. Parents and children
accustomed to conventional retellings of the familiar classic
tale of Cinderella will warmly welcome this innovative musical
version.” DRAMA-LOGUE
“No person in the audience, young or old, was left
unsatisfied...
you will LOVE this play. I recommend this play for all ages, and
I am happy to award this project the exceptional 5 MICE AWARD
(get to this event now!)!” HOWEE MOUSE GAZETTE
“Cinderella delivers fairy tale enchantment, visual wonderment
and
flashing humor in a top-quality production.”
PONY RIDE
“This extraordinary company creates a strange new brand of
excitement...
high points of this production are the play’s unabashed
theatrical style, plus the delightful score and lyrics...Truly
imaginative and entertaining, this play has all its spark plugs
firing.” L.A. PARENT
“A delight for the entire family!”
L.A. SPLASH
“Fabulous new twists!”
